Steve O'Reilly

The latest arrival to the team, Steve O'Reilly, 29 years old from Newark, Nottinghamshire. Steve and Dan Hopwood met and became good friends during their 4 year period serving for the Parachute Regiment. They were deployed on the same tours of duty, thus there was no doubt he could stand up to this challenge.

Now Steve concentrates running his own business based in Newark, Home Solutions currently has been running for three years and continues to expand specialising in Joinery and Carpertry.

During his spare time he enjoys swimming, cycling and the gym, maintaining fitness is important, you never know when you may get called up on an expedition at short notice!

Dan Burton

Dan comes from Doveridge, Derbyshire. After leaving school Dan completed his A-levels and went on to University to complete a BEng (Hons) in Materials Engineering studying part time whilst working for Rolls-Royce Turbine Systems.

On completion of his degree Dan profited from the property boom and left to travel Asia. He toured Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, China, South Korea and Russia amongst many other countries before returning to the UK in 2003.

After his year off drinking and having fun, Dan completed an MSc in Surface Engineering whilst working full time in the aerospace industry and joined the Territorial Army with the Royal Artillery.

He is currently serving with Multi-National Forces in Iraq with 40 Regiment the Lowland Gunners. Dan's interests include traveling,
scuba diving, skiing and keeping fit.

Stu Mackinnon

Stu left school at the age of 16 and studied a BTEC in motor vehicle engineering at Burton Technical College, Staffordshire. He continued onto higher education at Loughborough College and Stoke on Trent College achieving a HND/C in motor vehicle management.

A partner in a successful family run independent garage business established for over 30 years by his Father, Stu plays a major role in the running of the business

He competes in an oval circuit stock car which involves racing most weekends during the season. He's also an extremely keen skier, canoeist and gym enthusiast.

Dan Hopwood

Dan Hopwood

Dan served for 4 years with The Parachute Regiment serving in N. Ireland, Macedonia and Afghanistan. In September 2002 he broke his back in a motorcycle accident whilst traveling in Thailand, leaving him paralysed from the chest down.

He's a regular at the gym's at both University and Uttoxeter. Soon after his accident he got involved in Hawaiian Canoeing and went on to win a Gold medal in the 2006 World Sprint Championships. He thought of The Mississippi Paddle as a challenge in mid 2006.

He hopes to finish the expedition as a personal challenge whilst raising awareness for disability canoeing, Spinal Research, Spinal Injury and Inclusive Expeditions/Adventures.

He is currently studying for a BSc(H) in Forensic Computing at Staffordshire University.
